Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard has probably been in everyone’s supplement plan at one time or another. It has been the industry’s leading whey protein powder for a long time. A few years ago ON released their “Platinum” line which consisted of Platinum Hydrobuilder, Platinum Hydrowhey, Platinum Pre and in the spring of 2013 they will release Platinum Tri-Celle Casein.

Platinum Tri-Celle Casein is the best casein supplement that Optimum Nutrition has produced. Even though it hasn’t been released yet, there are some things that we do know about Platinum Tri-Celle Casein. Should Platinum Tri-Celle Casein be a staple in your supplement plan? Let’s take a closer look…

What is Platinum Tri-Celle Casein?

Platinum Tri-Celle Casein is a casein supplement with casein molecules that have been restructured to be three times the size as an average casein molecule. The benefit of having these super-sized molecules is that they “form an ultra-thick gel that takes several hours to be digested and absorbed, providing sustained release amino acid delivery for lasting lean muscle support” [1].

Platinum Tri-Celle Casein will come in 25 serving jars and be available in three flavors – Chocolate Decadence, Strawberry Indulgence and Vanilla Bliss. Each serving of Platinum Tri-Celle Casein provides 30 grams of protein, sustained amino acid delivery between meals and while you sleep (if taken before bed). Platinum Tri-Celle Casein also provides you with 60% of your daily calcium needs.

Optimum Nutrition is one of the most trusted and respected supplement brands out there. There is no doubt their protein supplements are the standard by which all other protein powders are judged. So, why should you take a micellar casein supplement? Let’s do some research and see what we can uncover about micellar casein.

Micellar Casein

Micellar Casein protein digests slowly, providing a constant release of valuable and powerful amino acids into your body over the course of several hours. Protein before bed? For reals!? If you think about it, it makes sense. The majority of muscle repair and regrowth happens while you’re fast asleep. While you’re asleep your body is taking the opportunity to recover from your intense training sessions. Casein is ideal before bed because it gives the body a constant, slow release supply of protein for use throughout the night.

Some recent studies on micellar casein protein suggest that it has longer-lasting anti-catabolic properties (upwards of 7-8 hours post ingestion) compared to a rapidly-digesting protein such as whey [2].

When Should You Take Platinum Tri-Celle Casein?

Casein protein powders are extremely versatile and you can really take them whenever you need protein. Most bodybuilders, physique and figure athletes that I know will take Casein right before bed, for reasons already explained. They will also combine their Casein protein with a whey protein isolate or hydrolysate so you get that instantaneous release combined with a prolonged release of aminos and protein.

Research has also shown that when casein protein is combined with whey protein it enhances the body’s anabolic response [3].

Final Thoughts on Platinum Tri-Celle Casein

If you are not using a casein supplement, then you should try it out. If you are like me you want to give your muscles every opportunity and chance to grow. There is plenty of research that supports the fact that casein is beneficial when taken before bed. Don’t go and toss out your whey protein supplement. It’s not like you have to choose one or the other. Both of these proteins are some of your greatest friends when it comes to building your ideal physique and should be used in conjunction with one another.

This is one man’s opinion. What really matters is how well it works for all of you. Please use our form below to share what your experiences have been with Platinum Tri-Celle Casein.
