I usually prefer to eat my steak and potatoes, but I might have to reconsider. GNC has recently launched a hybrid beef and potato protein supplement called Beyond RAW RARE. While this isn’t the first beef protein to hit the supplement market, I was surprised to see it come from GNC.

They have typically been pretty conservative with their protein powders, releasing different variations of whey. So what type of results can you expect from Beyond RAW RARE? Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Beyond Protein

GNC’s Beyond RAW RARE is ostensibly more than just a protein powder. It contains a performance blend with additional ingredients designed to boost your overall performance.

Two of these ingredients include betaine (2.5 g) and creatine precursors (6.2 g). Betaine is a choline metabolite, which is shown to increase strength and plays a role in joint and liver repair. It may also accelerate recovery from injury and inflammation.

Betaine is going to have a synergistic relationship with creatine.  It works by helping to convert glycocyamine to creatine, which prevents it from forming homocysteine. By lowering homocysteine levels, betaine enhances creatine uptake by muscles.[1]

You’re also going to get 1.5 g of arginine, which is going to increase nitric oxide production, blood flow, and help with nutrient absorption.

They’ve also added some garcinia cambogia, which suppresses appetite and blocks fat by inhibiting enzymes that your body needs to make fat from carbohydrates.

Beef For Bulk

As a natural source of b-vitamins, zinc, and creatine, beef is often preached as a must-eat food for anyone trying to build lean mass. Just like natural beef, Beyond RAW RARE has several creatine precursors and hydrolyzed beef peptides.

It’s also fortified with extra leucine to boost muscle protein synthesis and improve amino acid uptake into muscles. This further promotes faster growth and better recovery from your workout.

Taste and Mixabilty

I went through a container of the chocolate fudge flavor, and didn’t think it tasted any different than your average whey protein powder. To be clear, this is a good thing. I wasn’t sure a beef protein could taste decent, but I was pleasantly surprised.

It mixes up pretty well in a shaker cup with just water. There were a few tiny clumps of undissolved powder, but nothing too bad. Right now it’s available in chocolate fudge and vanilla.

Is Beyond RAW RARE Right For You?

I was initially kind of skeptical when I learned this was a beef and potato protein powder, but after trying it out, beef protein is something I can definitely get behind. I double the dosage post-workout, which gave me a full 12 grams of creatine precursors, 50 grams of protein, and 3 grams of arginine.

So just like a regular whey protein, this is pretty versatile and can be used either during a bulking or cutting phase.
