Back in March 2013, Allmax Nutrition introduced their latest product, Carbion, at the Arnold Expo. AllMax Carbion is marketed as a “High Performance Carbohydrate Drink” that has been “Electrolyte Infused”. Carbohydrate drinks have always been a part of my pre and post workout supplement plan. Carbs are the most effective fuel you can take, plus they prevent your body from going catabolic. And if you are building muscle, going catabolic is a bad thing!

When it comes to supplements, I am game to try anything. I currently taking a dextrose based carb drink. It is cheap (under $20), lasts a long time, and is a great addition to my protein shakes.

I do love all of the products that Allmax Nutrition has made. So, needless to say, I was really excited to give this product a try. But before I get to my experience with Allmax’s Carbion, let’s take a closer look at what it is and why you should consider adding a carb drink to your supplement plan!

What Is AllMax Nutrition Carbion?

Carbion is more than just a dextrose or carb drink. It is carb drink that delivers 6 Carb Complex which range from extremely complex to less complex. According to AllMax, this complex delivers “reliable, sustained energy”. What Allmax has done with Carbion is to include high levels of electrolytes which enhances to absorption of the carbohydrate complex. So what is this 6 Carb Complex?

Carbion’s 6 Carb Complex is a blend of CCD Clustered Cyclic Dextrin, DE-5 High Molecular Weight Dextrin Polysaccharide, AWM2300 Ultra-High Molecular Waxy Maize, Rice Polysaccharide (Glycosidically-Bound Monamer), Fibersol-2 Digestion-Resistant Dextrin (Highly Branched Structure), and Potato Polysaccharide (Glycosidically-Bound Monamer).

According to research, these high molecular weight carbs (Waxy Maize, CCD, DE-5, Rice and Potato starch) reachthe upper part of the small intestine very quickly. Then the pancreas releases a chemical called Alpha-Amylase to break the bonds holding each of the molecules together. What you end up with is the rapid delivery to the ideal location for absorption with a sustained rate of delivery.

Why Should You Take a Carb Drink?

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source. So if you are struggling through your workouts or during the day following your workout, take a look at your carbohydrate intake. I can almost guarantee that your carb intake is too low. A good carb drink is one of the “best ways to prevent cortisol levels from rising and catabolic muscle tissue breakdown from taking place.” (AllmaxNutrition.com)

To make it a little easier to understand, if you don’t feed your body carbs post workout, then your body will use muscle as its energy source, ie catabolism, which results in diminished gains. Don’t let all that hard work you put in at the gym go to waste. Your muscles are primed and ready right after you workout and you gotta replenish your glycogen stores. Carb drinks are the easiest way to do that.

How is Carbion Different Than Dextrose?

So, I mentioned earlier that I have been taking a dextrose based carb drink. According to researchers, the big issue with dextrose (glucose) is that once it reaches the upper part of the small intestine dextrose is pretty much immediately absorbed. This immediate absorption spikes your insulin, which escalates your blood sugar levels. You feel good and have energy for a moment, but then once those blood sugar levels drop you hit the wall, feeling tired and lethargic. From a training and competition standpoint, the performance of dextrose alone is very poor. Your body needs a better mix of simple and complex carbs to deliver a constant flow of energy.

AllMax Carbion – The Final Verdict

Allmax Carbion has a terrific mixability (no lumps) and it tastes great! When I take Carbion, I have terrific workouts and I never feel any sort of lethargy or crash during or after my workout. If you are looking for a carb drink that will lead to better performance and a higher level of endurance during your workout and give your body the carbs it needs post-workout then Carbion is a great addition to your supplement arsenal.

This is just one man’s opinion. What really matters is how well it works for all of you. Please use our form below to share what your experiences have been with Carbion.
